Orthodontic emergencies

Orthodontic emergencies don’t happen often, but when they do, you’re not alone. Whether it’s an accident or giving in to popcorn at the movies, Hentscher-Johnson Orthodontics is here to provide quick, compassionate care. We know that issues with orthodontic appliances can sometimes feel uncomfortable and even be a little painful or scary. That’s why our team is always ready to assist and get you the care that you need.

What Are Orthodontic Emergencies?

Not all orthodontic issues are orthodontic emergencies, but understanding what counts as one can help you know when to call our office right away.

Orthodontic emergencies happen when your braces or appliances are damaged in a way that causes a significant amount of discomfort or prevents them from properly doing their job. This could be caused by something like:

  • A broken bracket
  • A loose wire
  • Something else that makes your treatment feel painful or difficult

Some Common Orthodontic Emergencies And How To Respond

When learning how to identify orthodontic emergencies, it helps to understand the most common situations and what you can do to respond. Oftentimes, orthodontic emergencies can be managed at home until you are able to see us. Knowing what to do in the moment can make all the difference in staying comfortable and protecting your smile. 

Here are some common orthodontic emergencies and a few solutions to help:

If a bracket or band breaks or feels loose, call our office. You can cover any sharp edges with orthodontic wax to stay comfortable until your appointment.

Sometimes, a wire can come loose and poke or irritate your cheek or gums. Give our office a call to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, gently push it flat with a cotton swab or cover it with wax to help any discomfort until your appointment.

If you still have the appliance, don’t try to fix it yourself. Instead, bring the appliance to your next visit and contact us if it causes any discomfort. If it is lost, please let us know so that we can replace it.

These are common and usually not urgent, but let us know so we can replace them if needed.

Mild discomfort is normal after adjustments or receiving new appliances, and will go away within a few days. Rinsing with warm salt water or applying orthodontic wax to spots of irritation can help. Call us if you are experiencing any severe pain or if mild discomfort does not resolve after a few days.

If you experience an accident that causes damage to your teeth or mouth, contact us immediately. If it is severe or involves any heavy bleeding, call 911 or seek emergency care right away.

How To Avoid Orthodontic Emergencies

At Hentscher-Johnson Orthodontics, we believe that while accidents happen, many orthodontic emergencies can be avoided with a little extra care and attention.

Here are some simple tips to help your smile journey stay on track:

  • Avoid hard, sticky or chewy foods such as popcorn, nuts or gum. These can damage brackets or wires.

  • Wear a mouthguard when playing sports to protect your teeth and appliances.

  • Dr. Jodi and Dr. Little recommend brushing after each meal and flossing at least once a day. Be sure to take extra care around braces and appliances to keep your teeth and your orthodontic work clean and strong.

  • Teeth are not tools. Biting pens, fingernails or ice can lead to broken brackets or wires.

  • Follow all care instructions from Dr. Jodi and Dr. Little to keep your appliances working their best.

By taking these small steps, you’ll lower your risk of orthodontic emergencies and keep your smile journey moving smoothly.
